Carnevale 2011

This posting is to give a taste of Carnevale in Venice in 2011.  Nothing prepared me for the number of costumes, nor the elegance, nor the way the costumes were inhabited. Carnevale started as a time for celebration and expression throughout Venice, as wearing masks hid any form of identity between social classes. When one wore a mask, one could behave or be anyone or anything.  I have categorized my photographs to give you an idea of the theater of Carnevale.

ATMOSPHERE
As you walk around Venice during Carnevale, you immediately notice the number of people wearing costumes and masks.   Many tourists are wearing masks, some are wearing capes and masks, and some clearly make this an annual event, devoting time and considerable expense into creating costumes ornamented with velvet, brocade, organza, lace, and feathers.

POSING
Costuming was only part of Carnavale.  Individuals, couples, and groups would pose in unique vignettes that captured the character of the costume.

FAVORITES
Finally, these are my all time favorite photographs from the trip.
